And a Concert before I Go
Indie cred be damned, Friday night I ventured out to the middle of nowhere in Kansas to see Weezer, Blink-182, the Republic Tigers, Stellastarr*, Matt and Kim, and a few others I didn’t care about too much. I have observations:
- Definitely the frattiest crowd I have ever been a part of. Just by sporting flannel I think I looked more like a hipster than most anyone else there. I’m gonna chalk this up to Blink-182 headlining, mostly because I don’t want to think that Weezer has sunk so low.
- Observed a group of 12-14 year old kids decide to start a mosh pit during “Surf Wax America,” feebly bounce off each other for a while, look around confused realizing they have no idea how to start a mosh pit, and give up during the slower bridge.
- Troublemaker got the biggest crowd response. Something is amiss there.
- Only one song off Pinkerton, but a great one. “Why Bother” was one of the highlights for me, while the bros in sleeveless shirts around me idly stood around before freaking out when “Pork and Beans” came up next.
- Weezer still rocks live even though their new material isn’t so great and Rivers doesn’t play enough guitar live.
- Keyboard Cat played Weezer off.
- Blink-182 suck live. Although it was fun hearing some elementary school favorites, Tom cannot play guitar, their stage banter is painfully unfunny, and the pacing of the set left me bored for the last half hour.
- Still worth it for Weezer.
This was stop 3 in my things to do in Kansas City before I leave tour. Sorry to indulge in a little pretentiousness there, but figured I haven’t had much to post, so why not.
